By Steve Coyne
The Isle of Wight is a small island of 22 miles by 16 miles, it lies 2 - 4 miles off the south coast of England with the nearest point of the mainland being Lymington. The Island is served from three ferry ports including three car ferry routes and one passenger service. The car ferries run from Lymington to Yarmouth crossing time 20 minutes, and from Cowes to Southampton, and Fishbourne to Portsmouth crossing times 60 and 40 minutes. Foot passenger route is from Ryde to Portsmouth, and locally known if not affectionately as the vomit comet - crossing time is 15 minutes. In addition there is also a hover craft service from Southsea to Ryde , crossing time 8 minutes. Trains, the Isle of wight also boats the England's most reliable train service, although the track is only 8 miles long, it leads from Ryde through Smallbrook, Brading, Sandown, Lake and Shanklin. There are also two small airports Bembridge and Sandown. |
